One of the many pleasures of traveling is to stop into a corner barber shop and get a proper straight razor shave from someone who probably doesn’t speak English. All around the world, guys need to shave and a corner barber shop is a good way to immerse yourself into the local culture and you may even learn a few things – through hand gestures and your barber’s broken English and your broken local language.
Everywhere we have ever traveled, guys follow World Cup Football and you can get into good conversation with the locals about their team and your team as well as the top Football Teams. You can also get local food and activity recommendations that may be a bit more authentic than a hotel concierge. One particular shave in Nice was quite memorable. My barber, a woman named Annick, was a real pro. She had newspaper articles on her wall about famous people she had shaved and how long her shop, Absalon, had been there. She gave a great shave and complimentary French lessons while she did it all with cool jazz playing in the background. Tres Cool, Oui?
Of course, the best reason to get a proper straight razor shave while abroad is that the chicks (including your wife) will dig it!
